The Faroe Islands with Atlantic Airways

Atlantic Airways, the national airline of the Faroe Islands, is connecting this North Atlantic archipelago to the broader world. Established in 1987, the airline has its main hub at Vágar Airport on the island of Vágar. The Faroe Islands are an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and are renowned for their stunning landscapes, steep cliffs, and picturesque villages. Comprising 18 volcanic islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, this archipelago offers a blend of natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, making it an increasingly popular destination for travellers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences.

Atlantic Airways offers direct flights from several European cities to the Faroe Islands. Year-round services include routes from multiple Danish cities, while seasonal flights operate from destinations such as Edinburgh, Paris, and select Spanish locations during the summer months. These connections have been instrumental in boosting tourism and facilitating travel to and from the islands.

The airline’s fleet comprises modern aircraft, including the Airbus A320neo, known for its fuel efficiency and reduced environmental impact. In addition to fixed-wing aircraft, Atlantic Airways operates helicopter services, providing vital links to some of the more remote islands within the Faroese archipelago. This combination of services ensures comprehensive connectivity across the islands and beyond.

The Faroe Islands have experienced a significant increase in tourism over the past decade, with Atlantic Airways at the forefront of this growth. The airline’s strategic expansion of routes and commitment to high-quality service have made the islands more accessible to international travellers.

In response to the challenges posed by increased tourism, Atlantic Airways, in collaboration with Visit Faroe Islands, has implemented initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable and responsible travel. Programs such as “Closed for Maintenance” invite volunteers to participate in maintaining and preserving the islands’ natural beauty, ensuring that tourism development does not come at the expense of the environment.

As I flew on Atlantic Airways, I could see the quality of the airline. The feeling is so different from a budget carrier in terms of comfort and service. Their comfortable plane, combined with friendly service, made it an impressive flight experience. In the Faroe Islands, I did a road trip, which was one of the most beautiful road trips I’ve been on in all of my travels.

The Faroe Islands are one of my favourite destinations in the world, and if I had to pick just one in the first place, it might be the Faroe Islands. It does not have mass tourism, it’s stunning, it has fantastic people, excellent food, and it is very clean and well-kept. I don’t know what the future will bring and if there will someday be a low-cost airline operating, but for now, it is an extraordinary travel destination.
