Hotel Icefiord, Ilulissat
Hotel Icefiord is a charming and modern hotel located in Ilulissat, Greenland, offering guests a comfortable place to stay with direct views of the Ilulissat Icefjord—one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the Arctic and a UNESCO World Heritage site. I have visited more than 2,000 destinations, and Ilulissat is one of my favourites. Hotel Icefiord is one of the best places to stay in this charming town, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark despite being very far from Denmark itself.
My stay started with a friendly welcome and a talk with Emily, who checked me in. I walked to the room which I liked and which had contemporary colours, including a modern bathroom as well as a private balcony. Later, another receptionist helped me by booking a pickup from the property for a boat trip to the Icefjord. The property features a variety of stylish rooms and suites, most with large windows or private balconies that open up to the sea, giving guests a front-row seat to floating icebergs, passing whales, and the Arctic sky.
The hotel’s design emphasizes modern Nordic aesthetics, with clean lines, cozy interiors, and a welcoming atmosphere. Each room is equipped with essential amenities such as Wi-Fi, private bathrooms, and heating for comfort, especially during the colder months. For those looking for an upgraded experience, Hotel Icefiord also offers luxury apartments with more space and privacy, ideal for families or longer stays. They are located 50 metres from the hotel, and there are three in total.
Dining at Hotel Icefiord can be a highlight in itself. The on-site restaurant focuses on fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, including Greenlandic specialties such as halibut, reindeer, and musk ox. Guests can enjoy their meals while gazing out over the icy bay—an experience that perfectly blends the region’s culinary culture with its natural beauty. The bar and lounge area provide a cozy setting for relaxing with a hot drink or cocktail after a day of exploration.
Hotel Icefiord also serves as a hub for Arctic adventures. It offers a variety of guided tours, including boat trips to the Icefjord, visits to remote settlements, whale-watching excursions, and dog sledding in winter. In summary, Hotel Icefiord offers a comfortable base for experiencing Ilulissat’s stunning landscape, vibrant culture, and Arctic wildlife. Its cosy accommodations, beautiful views, and good service create an authentic Greenlandic experience in Illulisat, one of the best destinations in the world, in my opinion.
